What are your Candle Safety Smarts?

We all think we know everything there is to know about burning candles, but do we really? This quiz may clear up some things you didn't know!

1) Half of all home fires that were started by candles began in what room?___________________.

A) The Living Room

B) The Bedroom

C) The Kitchen

2) A home candle fire is reported how often? ______________________.

A) Every half hour

B) Every Hour

C) Every 2 hours

D) Once a day

3) What month has the most reports of home fires related to candles? _________________.

A) January

B) October

C) December

4) Candles should be kept how far away from things that could burn? ______________?

A) A couple of inches

B) One foot

C) Two feet

D) Three feet

5) What is the best way to extinguish a candle? ____________________.

A) Blow it out

B) Pinch the flame out with your fingers

C) Use a long handled candle snuffer

D) Pour water on it

Answers:

1) B - The Bedroom - This can be attributed to the fact that many people fall asleep with burning candles, or they put many candles too close to flamable objects to create a romantic setting.

2) B - Every Hour - Statistics show that candle fires are reported almost every hour. This rate has risen in recent years, due to the fact that more and more people are burning candles.

3) C - December - This month is the most deadly and is probably due to people using candles in decorations or festivities without proper safety methods.

4) B - One Foot - This is the safe distance, and although it may seem like a far distance, any closer and some materials or objects can heat up from the candle flame(s) and eventually catch fire.

5) C - A long handled candle snuffer - This is the safest way to extinguish a candle flame. Sometimes blowing it out can cause wax to splash or spill, so it is not recommended. If you don't have a candle snuffer on hand, you can blow out your candles by placing your finger in front of your lips as you blow softly....this disperses the flow of air and extinguishes the flame without splashing the wax with a hard blow.

  2. Great information. I am actually afraid to burn candles. With 3 kids running around, it's not worth the risk. I do, however, have lots for decoration.

  3. This is a great post, Kat! Thanks so much for the info :)
