What are your Candle Safety Smarts?

We all think we know everything there is to know about burning candles, but do we really? This quiz may clear up some things you didn't know!

1) Half of all home fires that were started by candles began in what room?___________________.

A) The Living Room

B) The Bedroom

C) The Kitchen

2) A home candle fire is reported how often? ______________________.

A) Every half hour

B) Every Hour

C) Every 2 hours

D) Once a day

3) What month has the most reports of home fires related to candles? _________________.

A) January

B) October

C) December

4) Candles should be kept how far away from things that could burn? ______________?

A) A couple of inches

B) One foot

C) Two feet

D) Three feet

5) What is the best way to extinguish a candle? ____________________.

A) Blow it out

B) Pinch the flame out with your fingers

C) Use a long handled candle snuffer

D) Pour water on it

Answers:

1) B - The Bedroom - This can be attributed to the fact that many people fall asleep with burning candles, or they put many candles too close to flamable objects to create a romantic setting.

2) B - Every Hour - Statistics show that candle fires are reported almost every hour. This rate has risen in recent years, due to the fact that more and more people are burning candles.

3) C - December - This month is the most deadly and is probably due to people using candles in decorations or festivities without proper safety methods.

4) B - One Foot - This is the safe distance, and although it may seem like a far distance, any closer and some materials or objects can heat up from the candle flame(s) and eventually catch fire.

5) C - A long handled candle snuffer - This is the safest way to extinguish a candle flame. Sometimes blowing it out can cause wax to splash or spill, so it is not recommended. If you don't have a candle snuffer on hand, you can blow out your candles by placing your finger in front of your lips as you blow softly....this disperses the flow of air and extinguishes the flame without splashing the wax with a hard blow.

Crafty Creative and Cheap ways to use Old Candle Wax!

Posted by KAT Friday, September 12, 2008 3 comments

Do you have old Candles, or bits of wax left in jars?
Do you usually throw these away, thinking there is nothing you can do with them once the wick is gone?
Here are a few tips for those of us that are cheap and frugal! LOL
Well, I have some tips here for you, that are going to save you money and spare you from throwing away all that good wax!

As I've told you in prior posts, I use 100% Soy Wax in my candles....

But you might have some other kinds of wax left over at your house.

Be careful not to mix the types of waxes, some are not compatible with others! There should be a lable on the jar telling you what kind of wax it is. If you aren't sure, just keep the same kind of leftover wax together.

  1. Save chunks or scrape out the unused wax from jars, and re-melt to make more candles. An easy and inexpensive way to do this is to use a saucepan with water in it and an old clean coffee can. You place the coffee can into the saucepan on the stove and put some of the unused wax into the can to melt. This acts as a double boiler and is the safest way to melt wax. While your wax is melting, put a wick into a container (perhaps one of the old jars?) and once the wax has melted you can pour it into the container and let harden.

  2. You can also melt the wax, very carefully if it is stuck in the bottom of a jar or container... just place it on a cup warmer (you know the ones they sell to keep your coffee warm at your desk?) and it will slowly melt the wax releasing the scent into the air. You can chose to do this until the smell is gone, or when the wax is melted, pour it into something else to make another candle! I actually sell the candle warmers here. They are just like the cup warmers, only a bit bigger to accomodate a jar candle. Check it out!

  3. Now, be very careful when melting wax!!! NEVER heat wax directly in a saucepan on the stove.....it looks safe but sometimes when pouring it can combust and burst into flames! You can be severely burned by this! Please always use a double boiler, or the cheap-0 method described above.

  4. If you choose to use a candy thermometer to gauge the temperature, never let the wax get any hotter than 200 degrees. Always let it cool down a bit before pouring.

  5. You want to know about wicks?? You can purchase a package of wicks at any crafts store for about $2.00 and they usually come with a wick tab at the bottom to hold the wick in place (much easier when making candles).

  6. OR....you can use a birthday candle for your wick!!! How cool!?!

  7. You can melt your old candle pieces in a Tart Burner or Potpourri burner. The potpourri burners look like little crock pots and they plug in, and the electricity warms the pot making the wax melt. The tart burners use a tealight underneath a bowl that holds the wax, and the flame melts the wax. Both are excellant ways to use up that old wax without having to get wicks. Both of these can be found for usually around $5.00-$10.00 at Wal-Mart or Costco, some store like that.

  8. Here is a Craft tip for you..........You can melt wax in an old coffee can, and then dip pine cones in the wax for a creative and festive look, or to use as firestarters! The wax coated pine cones will help the flames light in your fireplace, or fire pit!

  9. Another cool idea for a fire starter is to get some old empty toilet paper rolls, fill them with lint from your dryer or newspaper , and coat these in the old wax. Then use these to push into openings in the logs when trying to start a fire. This is so much cheaper than buying the premade fire starters.

  10. Use a grater or vegetable peeler and grate some of the old wax into a pile on a covered area. Then take some of the shavings and make sachets out of the wax shavings! You can use netting, cloth, old pantyhose or bags, the choices are endless. You can hang these in your closet or hamper, put them in drawers or even in your car as an air freshener!

  11. If you keep your scents and your colors seperate, you can make layered candles. Just melt one at a time, and pour one at a time, let harden, and you will have layered candles! With the scent being layered, it might smell like blueberry and then go into apple, then go into vanilla, there are so many choices! Just make sure that the scents go well together, or you will have a "stinky" candle that you won't want to burn. This layering method will not work with the cup warmer idea above in #2, the wax will all melt together.

  12. Try and mix up some good scents by yourself.....a bakery scent with a different bakery scent for example.....or a floral with another floral! You can mix and match and create all kinds of different smelling candles

Well, there you have it!

A bunch of ideas for you to use up that old wax that I'm sure you were frustrated about, and usually ended up throwing away!

Hopefully, these tips were useful and will save you some money.

Healthy Soy Wax Candles Video

Posted by KAT Saturday, August 30, 2008 63 comments

This is a great video showing the reasons why you should choose soy wax candles as the healthy alternative when you are burning candles.

Watch below and you will see some good reasons for choosing Soy Wax Candles.

I made the choice to make all my candles with soy wax, once I decided to make my own candles. I did a lot of research into the benefits and drawbacks of candles.

I was very surprised at the facts that I found out about paraffin candles.

Please make the healthy decision for you, your family and your pets and only burn Soy Wax Candles in your home from now on...........

I thank you, and the environment thanks you.

Making Soy Wax Candles

Posted by KAT Friday, August 22, 2008 4 comments

2 candles and sunflowers
When I make candles, it gets pretty hot here!

The wax needs to be melted at 190 degrees, and that is pretty hot~

Once the wax is melted, you can add the color, but you have to let it cool a bit, before adding any of the scent, otherwise, alot of the fragrance will dissipate in the hot oil, and the candle will not smell as strong as you had planned. I make all my candles to smell the absolute strongest that they can smell, so I take this step very seriously!

The next step is to wick the container you are pouring the wax into. I like to secure my wicks prior to pouring, but some companies pour a little of the wax into the bottom of jar, and wait a few minutes, and then they put the wick into the wax before it hardens, securing the wick. Then they pour the rest of the wax for the candle. I don't do it that way..... I use "Tacky wax" which acts as an adhesive holding the wick tab to the bottom of the container, kinda like a glue dot. That way, I can pour the whole candle all at once, and I don't have a line where the 2 different pours were, and I don't have a floaty wick when the candle burns down that far!

Once my wax has cooled and I have added the color and scent, I pour it into the prepared container or jar of choice, and then I just have to wait for it to set up.

That is when I make the lables for the jars. (I am not a big enough company to have all kinds of pre-printed lables available at my disposal)

And that is what it takes to make my candles!

Please come on over and take a look at my website: http://www.katscandles.com/

I have loads of things to look at and over 100 scents that you can choose from.....

Something off Track!

Posted by KAT Tuesday, August 19, 2008 2 comments

And now for something completely off the subject......
This has nothing to do with soy wax candles, or sunflowers.....
I just thought these were hilarious!! And I wanted to share them with you.
I received these 2 jokes from my friend last nite, and I was literally laughing out loud, with tears rolling down my cheeks!
Now, maybe it is my sick sense of humor, I don't know, but I wanted to share them anyway.
Let me know what you think!

wrapped present
A Gift for my Wife
Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife.
A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this:
Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie.
What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety.
WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing!I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!!
Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.
Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second)and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat.
But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?
So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.
All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!'
What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.
I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dipshit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . . HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!! . . .WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HELL!!!
I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs.
The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.
Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative? SON-OF-A-BITCH, THAT HURT LIKE HELL!!!
A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocaine, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I shit myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!!
P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!

Only in Texas my friends - Only in Texas - Too bad.
A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff's deputy.
He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he is a lawyer from New York, and is certain that he has a better education then a cop from Houston .
He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Texas deputy's expense.
The deputy says, 'License and registration, please.' '
What for?' says the lawyer.
The deputy says, 'You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign.'
Then the lawyer says, 'I slowed down, and no one was coming.'
'You still didn't come to a complete stop,' says the deputy. 'License and registration, please.'
The lawyer says, 'What's the difference?'
'The difference is you have to come to complete stop. That's the law. License and registration, please!' the Deputy says.
Lawyer says, 'If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket.'
'That sounds fair. Please exit your vehicle, sir,' the deputy says.
At this point, the deputy takes out his nightstick and starts beating the daylights out of the lawyer and says,
'Do you want me to stop, or just slow down?'

OMG! I am laughing all over again at these as I post them..... I am sick! :D

More Sunflower Facts....

Small Sunflower

Part 2 of Sunflower Facts......

Most people know sunflowers that are bright yellow with dark brown centers, but varieties are cropping up (a little pun there!) now which have orange, maroon, tan and even striped petals, and green-yellow centres. Some don't even have the center seedy covered disc, but they are completely covered with petals all over instead. (I personally don't think of these as sunflowers, but a mutant blend that someone has come up with! Give me the yellow and brown, and I'm a happy girl!)

Sunflowers are a member of the "Astor" family.

Most sunflowers are grown for the seeds and oil they produce. Each mature flower yields 40% of its weight as oil. This oil is used for cooking mostly, but is now being looked into for fuel. It is being studied as a biological source of hydrogen for potential use in biofuels. And we all know about eating sunflower seeds! The salty covered treats we ate as kids, where that was one of only a few times your mother let you spit something out of your mouth, when you had to get rid of the shell....the other I can think of is watermelon seeds..... Somehow, being a girl, and being able to spit was a big deal for me!

In 2006, the Lays Company began frying its entire line of potato chips and snacks in NuSun brand sunflower oil, cutting saturated fat by 50 percent. This was and is good news for all of us! I smile when I see the sunflower on the "Lays" bags of chips.

The Sunflower in my Logo........

sunflower

I have a strange addiction to Sunflowers......
I am drawn to them wherever they are, and whatever their image may be on....

They remind me of my Dad who is no longer with me, and so, when I see a Sunflower, it makes me think of my Dad and makes me smile. I only started noticing Sunflowers right after he passed away, and then I learned some very interesting facts about them.

I started using a Sunflower in my logo for my candle business and it has stuck. Now that I am blogging, I am using one on my blog too!

Here are some interesting facts about Sunflowers:

The first and foremost, is that the sunflower is the only flower that reaches towards the heavens and follows the sun.....that to me is profound. This phenomenon known as heliotropism, where the head of the sunflower tracks the sun's movements.

The French word for Sunflower is: tournesol, or "turn with the sun"

The sunflowers scientific name is Helianthus. It comes from two words, Helios meaning sun, and Anthos, meaning flower.

The tallest recorded sunflower grown was 25 feet, 5& 1/2 inches tall in 1986, and was grown in the Netherlands by a M. Heijmf.

The largest recorded sunflower head measured 32 1/2 inches across its widest point and was grown in Canada.

The shortest recorded sunflower was just over 2 inches tall and was grown in Oregon using the Bonsai technique.

Sunflower heads consist of 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers joined together by a receptacle base. The large petals around the edge of a sunflower head are individual ray flowers which do not develop into seed.

More Sunflower facts to come....................

Where are all the people with really good scents??
Lady shrugging shoulders

I was hoping for more comments with some unusual names of candle scents.

Does anyone else know of other weird or strange names for candles?

Please leave me your answers below...............

I sell many different candle scents at http://www.katscandles.com/ , and all of my food/bakery candles are very true to the name....

If the lable says "Hot Fudge Brownies", then that is EXACTLY what it will smell like!

If it is "Macintosh Apple", same, same.....just like a fresh juicy apple!

I have numerous people come up to me at craft shows, and comment on how they smell exactly like whatever the lable says.... and they are usually surprized at how realistic the smells are. I just stand there and smile, because usually, I have gone through the whole explanation of "how they smell exactly like what the lable says" and the person usually gives me the half-smile thingy and then picks the candle up to smell for themselves. Then they look at me with this incredulous look on their faces, like OMG! I didn't believe you!

BUT............

Then there are the scents that need explanation.........

Some of them I am describing all day long, because the lables aren't self explanatory.

My best seller and the one that needs the most explaning is:

Monkey Farts

Now I know that you are expecting a really, really disgusting smelling candle, but...

If you can just imagine everything a monkey might ingest, and then have blow out the backside, it actually smells really good! It has bananas, sweet grapefruit, kiwi, strawberry, and some bubble gum that smells like bubble yum, with an undertone of vanilla.

Now.....Doesn't that smell delish?

I can tell you that I sell more of this candle than any other, lots of sales are for the name alone, for example, customer #1 says to customer #2 that she is going to get her husband "monkey farts" because he will get the biggest kick out of it!!! And lots of sales are for the scent once customer #1 smells it and realizes that is isn't gross!

Below are some others that need explanation.......

BUTT NAKED

This has a nice combination of granny smith apples and honeydew melon, with some strawberries and pears, and hints of spice.

COCO MANGO

This is a really nice tropical scent, it is very light and begins with mango, fresh strawberries, elderberries, and ripe papaya. It has undertones of rich vanilla and toasted coconut and just a hint of soft musk.

SMOKE ELIMINATOR

This is really good to get rid of nasty smells in your house, with the aroma of juicy lime and lemon zests with hints of herbal cilantro. It covers the smell of foul odors, and is great for smokers of all kinds!

GODS LOVE

This is a best seller just from the name, but once you smell it, you'll love it! It has the scent of soft baby powder with a hint of ripened sweet mulberries.

SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

A true stress-relieving aroma: Floral bouquet of ylang ylang, jasmine, rose and carnation with hints of violet and undertones of exotic woods.

I hope you have enjoyed reading into the different scents and names and seeing what goes into the scents, and that sometimes.....you just need to do some explaining.

Let me know what you think!!! Are there any scents out there that you can think of that I haven't listed, that sound funny, or need explaining?

Leave me your most outrageous candle scent............
