The Sunflower in my Logo........
I have a strange addiction to Sunflowers......
I am drawn to them wherever they are, and whatever their image may be on....
They remind me of my Dad who is no longer with me, and so, when I see a Sunflower, it makes me think of my Dad and makes me smile. I only started noticing Sunflowers right after he passed away, and then I learned some very interesting facts about them.
I started using a Sunflower in my logo for my candle business and it has stuck. Now that I am blogging, I am using one on my blog too!
Here are some interesting facts about Sunflowers:
The first and foremost, is that the sunflower is the only flower that reaches towards the heavens and follows the sun.....that to me is profound. This phenomenon known as heliotropism, where the head of the sunflower tracks the sun's movements.
The French word for Sunflower is: tournesol, or "turn with the sun"
The sunflowers scientific name is Helianthus. It comes from two words, Helios meaning sun, and Anthos, meaning flower.
The tallest recorded sunflower grown was 25 feet, 5& 1/2 inches tall in 1986, and was grown in the Netherlands by a M. Heijmf.
The largest recorded sunflower head measured 32 1/2 inches across its widest point and was grown in Canada.
The shortest recorded sunflower was just over 2 inches tall and was grown in Oregon using the Bonsai technique.
Sunflower heads consist of 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers joined together by a receptacle base. The large petals around the edge of a sunflower head are individual ray flowers which do not develop into seed.
